“The concentration of wolf packs in certain European regions has become a real danger, especially for livestock,” said Von Der Leyen in a press release.
“To more actively manage the concentrations of critical wolves, the local authorities have long required more flexibility,” she said, adding that today’s proposal “will help (them) find more targeted solutions to protect both, biodiversity and our rural livelihoods”.
With this proposal, Von Der Leyen also holds one of the campaign promises made during the EU elections last year by his political family – the European People’s Party of the Center -Drut, which proclaims the “Farmer’s Party”.
The bill will now be discussed by the European Parliament and the EU Council, representing the 27 national governments, before it becomes officially law.
The Commission has added that EU countries will always have the possibility of maintaining a higher level of protection of Wolf, if it will deem it necessary under their national law.
However, certain governments, notably Austria, Finland, Sweden, Slovakia and Romania, as well as few conservative deputies have suggested downgrading other protected species such as bears, lynx, seals and corlolors.
