Far -right French floats on the government in the wake of the verdict of Le Pen – Politico

The moment of their messaging, however, is unlikely a coincidence. The Pen last week was found guilty of having diverted the funds from the European Parliament and immediately hitting a ban on presenting itself to public functions, which will bring it out of the 2027 presidential election unless a court of appeal is in its favor.

Since the verdict, party officials have concentrated a large part of their public messages on the framing of the case as hunt for judicial witches against Le Pen, which is published as the first rank of the next presidential election. But the underlying threat of possibly voting to overthrow the government has focused.

Managers of the pro-government ranks had expressed concerns before the verdict was only pronounced the legal problems of Le Pen could encourage the party to adopt a more aggressive posture towards the minority government of Bayrou, which at least needs the tacit support of part of the opposition to stay in power.

As the largest single party in the French National Assembly, the National Rally plays a crucial role in determining the survival of the government. The party has so far been abstained from supporting requests without confidence against Bayrou advanced by left -wing opposition groups.

Pro-government officials who have linked threats to the national rally to the Government of the Pen Verdict at the fate of Barnier’s fate, which seemed to benefit from tacit support from the far right throughout his short term. However, after prosecutors have announced that they would request the ban on the PEN function for the public service in November, the National Rally helped to torpedo the government despite its precious concessions on politics.

The National Rally could try to move the goal posts on its legislative priorities as a pretext to bring Bayrou. During his interview, Chenu said that the longtime debate on pensions, that Bayrou initially opened the door to revisit before going back, as a potential reason without confidence.

A collapse of the government would increase pressure on President Emmanuel Macron to call new elections this summer, while the fragmented majority of France continues to fight with instability and blocking. Le Pen, which presides over the National Rally Group of the National Assembly, would not be authorized to present itself to re -election due to the sentence of ineligibility pronounced against it.
