Fans horrified over Troye Sivan’s $700 new home product

Australian singer and actor Troye Sivan has been slammed online for flogging locally made products after promoting a bottomless brass bowl worth $700.

The Grammy and Oscar-nominated artist took to his Instagram on Saturday to promote the so-called “bottomless (baseless) and beautiful” bowl.

The 28-year-old told fans he had been “living with (the bowl) for a few months and it’s definitely my favorite”, but was quickly criticized for the promotion.

Commenters called the golden ring a “hula hoop”, a “bowl of glory” and an indictment of consumerism, with one user saying: “This is crazy.” It’s a ring.

“There is no such thing as a bottomless bowl, it’s an extremely expensive ring/hoop,” one user said. Another said they could no longer “take (Sivan) seriously.” Is it real?”

Others pointed out the growing trend of celebrities creating their own brands, with one user saying: “These celebrity brands are getting more ridiculous and obnoxious every time.”

“I’m sure someone will find this piece ‘artistic’ and ‘new’…go ahead and pay $700 for it. I don’t care one way or the other, but this is consumerism at its stupidest.”

The so-called bowls are produced in collaboration between artist Joel Adler and Carlton, Victoria-based studio Tsu Lange Yor, of which Sivan is creative director.

They are available in two sizes; one presented by Sivan as being for “keys, wallet, headphones” and another, larger one, suitable for “perishable products like tomatoes, citrus fruits and squash”.

According to the Tsu Lange Yor website, the small bowl will cost buyers $196, while the larger bowl will cost $718. Both offer the option of paying with Afterpay.
