Marcus Smart did not play for Washington Wizards when they visited Boston Celtics on Sunday, but he was involved in a brief verbal altercation with a fan.
Smart was sitting on the Wizards bench when a fan seemed to have said something to attract the caretaker’s attention. The two exchanged words in a cries match because Smart was visibly upset and had to be retained by his teammates. The fan was escorted out of the game by TD Garden Security shortly after.
“(The fan) has just crossed the line and we all know that I do not cross lines,” said Smart about the exchange after a loss of 124-90 Wizards. “That’s it. We are moving on.
It seemed that Smart continued to chat with the fan before being led outside the stands, but the veteran guard minimized the exchange.
“Stopping it towards security,” said Smart. “I’m just trying to get him out before it degenerates that he was. But it’s over with it, it’s done with the next one.”
Most Boston fans present showed a lot of intelligent love during the Celtics’ victory despite the altercation. Smart was a healthy DNP-CD in defeat, a decision that was not suitable for Boston fans who chanted “We Want Marcus” throughout the fourth quarter of the Celtics victory.
“Discover on the fly,” said Smart about him sitting on the game. “You always want to play, but at the same time, it was good to take all love and not have to be focused on the game too. It was a little mix between the two.”
The Wizards acquired Smart on the deadline for exchanges in an agreement to three Memphis teams. He has an average of 9.3 points and 2.5 assists per match in 14 appearances and won praise from his coach Brian Keefe before the victory.
“It was great,” said Keefe. “Obviously, delighted to have it in our team, as you know here in this city. What he meant for the city of Boston. A great leader, a great player, just the knowledge he has in the game, the amount of experience he had designed to transmit to our guys. He was great.”
Smart has a year remaining on his agreement in Washington, but draws the best party from mentoring the young list of the team after the surprise agreement.
“They call me one and things like that. I’m not ready for that,” said Smart about playing with reconstruction wizards. “But it’s great. It’s a big group of young guys here, and what I like about them is that they are ready to learn and they are ready to learn. They constantly ask me, constantly ask me to demonstrate things, and that’s what you ask.
