Falcons sign CB AJ Terrell to four-year, $81 million contract

The physical cornerback has become one of the NFL’s best cover guys during his four seasons in Atlanta. Terrell is a shadow cornerback who regularly matches up against the No. 1 receivers on the roster.

Named a second-team All-Pro in 2021, Terrell compiled 247 tackles, 43 pass deflections, four interceptions and one sack in four seasons.

Surprisingly, Terrell has never been selected to the Pro Bowl. His lack of interceptions (none in the last two seasons) likely keeps him off the national radar, but that doesn’t reflect his impact. The 25-year-old is the straw that breaks the camel’s back in the Falcons’ defensive secondary. His ability to track down high-profile targets is rare in today’s game. That skill might lead to some yards given up, but Terrell has shown the talent to make plays in key moments.

In Raheem Morris’ first year, the Falcons could have gambled the campaign away seeing how the cornerback fit into the scheme. Instead, they locked him up through the 2028 season.

It’s the latest big offseason move for the Falcons, who traded for edge rusher Matt Judon and signed safety Justin Simmons last week.
