Consumers are warned of a phishing scam wrongly pretending to Costco, the Sonoma county’s county’s District Office announced on Thursday.
The scam involves an email offering a free ice manufacturer in exchange for carrying out a survey, the press release noted.
The email of the scam, which seems to come from Costco, is in fact an attempt to steal financial information or access computers, said officials.
The message can be read as follows: “Dear costco shopper, we would like to offer you a unique opportunity to receive a brand new manufacturer of ninja Creamli ice cream!”
The managers advise the verification of the sender’s e-mail address to check the authenticity.
In this case, the e-mail came from the domain “@ handoneed.net”, not an official costco address.
Scammers often create urgency with deadlines to put pressure on the beneficiaries of the pressure to act quickly, officials said. Consumers are invited to avoid clicking on suspicious links and reporting phishing attempts to the authorities.
