Facebook’s political advertising policies often ignored in Indian elections

Many political ads running on Facebook in India during the current election season are supported by organizations that hide their identities, according to civil society groups and recent studies, threatening the integrity of a process intended to enforce transparency in a system full of emotional appeals.

India’s election period, the world’s largest and one of the costliest, began last month and will continue until June 1. Facebook has hundreds of millions of users in the country, which is the social network’s largest market, and rakes in a significant portion of its revenue. campaign spending is estimated at $16 billion.
