Fabio Cannavaro’s Udinese avoid Serie A relegation thanks to former England youth international

Keinan Davis achieved hero status by saving Udinese from relegation in their final Serie A match.

The Italian side, managed by former Real Madrid and Inter Milan defender Fabio Cannavaro, claimed a late 1-0 victory in a huge six-point relegation romp over Frosinone on Sunday.

Substitute Davis’ 76th-minute effort was enough to condemn their opponents to relegation.

Six years ago, the centre-forward represented England Under-20s.

After rising through the ranks from Aston Villa’s academy to the first team in 2017, Davis made 86 appearances for the Villans.

However, he has only scored six goals and had seven assists in that span.

Loans to Nottingham Forest and Watford at the end of his time at Villa saw him score 12 times in 56 appearances collectively.

But following his permanent move to Italy this summer, he has now been written into the history books at his new club.

This is despite Sunday’s goal being his only one in eight appearances for Udinese after missing the vast majority of the season through injury.

Cannavaro’s team ultimately finished 15th, two points ahead of 18th-placed Frosinone.

The hosts – who needed just a point to survive – failed to win back-to-back Serie A seasons for the first time ever.

Cagliari and Empoli also held on, both finishing a point above the drop zone.

Serie A side Lecce have announced the sacking of their manager Roberto D’Aversa after a shocking headbutt on Hellas Verona’s Thomas Henry.

Meanwhile, Frosinone joined already relegated Sassuolo and Salernitana to move down to Serie B.
