Exton Carnival canceled after police shut down due to unruly crowd of young people

EXTON, Pa. (CBS) — The Exton Square Mall Spring Carnival is canceled after the carnival business’ permit was revoked following a significant crowd control issue Saturday night, the Department of Transportation announced Sunday. West Whiteland Police.

Police say the decision to revoke the permit and shut down the mall carnival completely was made as a safety precaution for participants.

Police initially shut down the Chester County Carnival Saturday night after a group of juveniles created what authorities described as a “dangerous environment” for fair attendees. Additional officers from county agencies were also called in to assist with crowd control.

Although they did not specify exactly what happened, police said the large crowd in the outdoor parking lot of Exton Square Mall was creating a disturbance.

On Saturday evening, carnival company Goodtime Amusements said in a Facebook post that the Exton Carnival was closed “indefinitely” due to the “uncontrollable behavior and resulting disturbance.”

West Whiteland Township police are asking anyone with video of Saturday’s carnival to submit it through their tip line to help with their investigation.

Police are also investigating a fight they say took place inside the mall after the carnival closed. The department released surveillance footage captured by a business at the mall and is asking for the public’s help in identifying anyone involved.

The video shows a long-haired person being punched and kicked several times in the presence of several witnesses. Anyone with information related to the assault is asked to submit a tip online or contact Detective Sergeant McCloskey at jmccloskey@westwhiteland.org.

The Exton Square Spring Carnival was previously scheduled to take place May 9-18.

Any information regarding ticket refunds should be directed to carnival staff, police said.
