Explosions heard in Ukrainian capital

Loud explosions were heard Saturday morning above the Ukrainian capital, kyiv, as authorities warned of the arrival of ballistic missiles.

An air alert had just ended when at 5:50 a.m. local time, booms were heard throughout the city. A few seconds later, the air-warning sirens began to wail.

The country’s air defense systems are working, the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, wrote on Telegram, warning of the missile threat and calling on residents to stay in shelters.

Shortly after, he said emergency services were responding to the scene of a fire. The city’s regional military administration said four people were killed.

Both sides in the nearly three-year war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, have intensified their attacks in recent weeks.

This is a developing story.
