Ex-Man United boss Ralf Rangnick emerges as Bayern Munich candidate after Julian Nagelsmann leaves them shocked

Former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has emerged as a serious candidate to take charge of Bayern Munich this summer.

Bayern Munich were considering asking Julian Nagelsmann to return to the club to replace Thomas Tuchel, who will leave at the end of the season.

But after the German national team manager signed a new contract with the country until 2026, the Bundesliga giants were left shocked and looking for an alternative.

According to L’Equipe, Bayern’s managerial search could see them turn to Rangnick, which would be a surprise move.

The 65-year-old is currently in charge of the Austrian national team, but is well remembered for his poor spell at United.

The German coach took charge of the Red Devils on an interim basis in November 2021 until the end of the season, but led the club to their worst points record in Premier League history.

United finished sixth with 58 points and plans to keep Rangnick in a consulting role were abandoned.

He also has the lowest win rate of any United manager in Premier League history, at 37.93 percent.

After 29 games in charge, Rangnick has overseen 11 wins, 10 draws and eight defeats – scoring 37 goals and conceding 37.

Nonetheless, Bayern only want someone to keep the seat warm until Xabi Alonso decides to leave Bayer Leverkusen.

The Spaniard was the main target of the Munich hierarchy, but revealed he was going nowhere after leading Leverkusen to a first-ever Bundesliga title this season.

Although Rangnick’s time at United may not go down in history as a major success, the German coach had a long sporting career.

German football expert Constantin Eckner reveals Thomas Tuchel could be sacked ahead of the Champions League second leg against Arsenal, with Bayern Munich banned from all competitions.

He is considered one of the pioneers of gegenpressing tactics, used by Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, while his role at Red Bull as director of football oversaw a highly successful youth development system which produced a list big stars.

Other managers linked with Bayern Munich include Zinedine Zidane and Roberto De Zerbi, while the German giants could yet end the season with silverware after reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.
