Everton have officially withdrawn their appeal against a two-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

The club had lost further points on April 8 after being handed a 10-point penalty in November for a PSR breach relating to the three-year accounting period which ended in the 2021-22 season.

The Toffees had previously claimed that they did not consider the second sanction, that relating to the period ending in the 2022-23 campaign, “to be appropriate”, and as they had previously, they had announced their intention to do appeal the decision.

They had already managed to reduce their previous sanction by 10 points, but issued a statement on Friday announcing that they would withdraw their candidacy.

In a statement, the club said: “Everton Football Club has withdrawn its appeal against the decision of an independent Premier League committee to impose a two-point deduction on the club for breaching the club’s profitability and sustainability rules. Premier League for the accounting period ending June 2023.

“A hearing, scheduled for later this month, will not take place and the club will conclude the 2023/24 Premier League season with the two-point deduction remaining in force.”

It comes after Nottingham Forest this week lost their appeal against a four-point deduction for a similar breach of the Premier League’s spending rules.

The deduction dealt a major blow to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side’s hopes of avoiding relegation to the Championship this season, with the club currently 17th in the Premier League table, just three points outside the relegation zone.

Everton, meanwhile, have been battling on the pitch to escape danger, with recent wins over Forest and Liverpool both helping to steer Sean Dyche’s side away from the drop.
