Pass Fire: Evacuation alerts in Truckee, multiple agencies responding

WE BEGIN WITH THE LATEST NEWS. AND THIS IS THE LATEST NEWS THAT IS COMING OUT OF NEVADA COUNTY TONIGHT. CREW ARE FIGHTING A VEGETATION FIRE IN TRUCKEE. AND WE JUST GOT THIS VIDEO THIS AFTERNOON. AND YOU CAN SEE A FIREBALL RISING INTO THE AIR, AS WELL AS THICK BLACK SMOKE. A SIGN THAT SOMETHING ELSE MAY BE BURNING OTHER THAN VEGETATION IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA. PLEASE JOIN US TONIGHT AT 6:00 PM. MY ASSISTANT IS GULSTAN DART AND MY ASSISTANT IS ANDREA FLOREZ. THE FIRE IS ALREADY PROMPTING EVACUATION WARNINGS. IT’S BEEN CALLED THE PAST FIRE. IT STARTED THIS AFTERNOON BEHIND THE SAFEWAY SHOPPING CENTER ON DONNER PASS ROAD IN TRUCKEE. OFFICIALS TELL US IT’S BURNING BETWEEN THE SAFEWAY AND THE COYOTE MOON GOLF COURSE. AND THIS FIRE IS ALREADY PROMPTING EVACUATION WARNINGS. HERE’S A LIVE LOOK AT THE EVACUATION MAP FOR THIS FIRE ZONE RIGHT NOW. ALL THE ZONES IN YELLOW HERE, THEY ARE DEFAULT EVACUATION WARNINGS. THERE ARE NO MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDERS ISSUED. AND KCRA 3’S ANDRES VALLE JOINING US LIVE NOW FROM THE FIRE. SO, ANDRES, I CAN SEE CREW BEHIND YOU. WHAT DO YOU SEE OVER THERE? RIGHT NOW? YEAH. SO FAR, IT’S SOME KIND OF A COMMAND CENTER THAT’S RIGHT HERE IN THE PARKING LOT OF THIS SAFEWAY. IT’S KIND OF A SHOPPING MALL TOO, BUT WE’VE BEEN WATCHING HELICOPTERS DROPPING WATER ALL ALONG THE FIRE. I JUST FINISHED AN INTERVIEW WITH THE TRUCKEE FIREFIGHTERS MAYBE FIVE MINUTES AGO. AND HE SAYS THE FIRE HAS GROWN TO ABOUT 3 AND A HALF ACRES RIGHT NOW, IT APPEARS TO BE ABOUT 20% CONTAINED AND. THEY HAVE CREW OUT HERE FOR ALMOST THE REST OF THE DAY AND THIS EVENING, TO TAKE CARE OF THE FIRE. THEY HAVE GROUND CREW OUT AGAIN AND HAND CREW ALONG THE FIRE LINE. WE JUST GOT HERE ABOUT 15 MINUTES AGO, SO WE’RE GIVING YOU UP TO DATE, BUT WE KNOW IT’S BURNED A SMALL PORTION OF THIS GOLF COURSE. BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS ACCORDING TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, THE WAY THE FIRE BURNT, IT BURNT AWAY FROM THE MALL. SO IT COULD HAVE BEEN PRETTY DANGEROUS, AT LEAST FOR SOME OF THE BUILDINGS TO CATCH FIRE HERE. BUT THE WINDS PUSHED IT UP THE HILL, SO WE’RE GOING TO MOVE UP THERE TO CHECK OUT THE DAMAGE. I LIVE HERE IN TRUCKEE. I’M ON THIS FIRE FOR KCRA THREE NEWS. ANDREA, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. AND VIEWERS HAVE BEEN SENT VIDEO OF THE FIRE TO OUR NEWSROOM. KYLIE PETERSON SENT US THIS VIDEO OF THE PREVIOUS FIRE. YOU CAN SEE THE SMOKE. THIS FIRE IS RAZING OUT HERE. WHITE AND DARK SMOKE. KYLIE PETERSON ALSO SENT US A VIDEO AND YOU CAN SEE A PLANE DROP THEIR FIRE RETARDANT ON THE LEADING EDGE OF THE FLAMES. AND YOU CAN SEE JUST THE SMOKE COMING OUT OF THIS FIRE, THE RED FIRE RETARDANT FALLING DOWN, TRYING TO STOP IT. AND THEN LOOK AT THIS VIDEO WE HAVE HERE. IT’S FROM KEVIN LYMAN WHO SENT US THIS OTHER VIEW OF THIS SMOKE PATCH. IT’S BOILING, BUILDING UP IN THE SKY HERE. AND THE CREW ARE BACK THERE, DROP OFF THAT TIMER. BRING IN METEOROLOGY DIRK VERDOORN NOW. SO DIRK, HOW DID THE WEATHER PLAY ALL THIS? YEAH, THE BIGGER, THE BIGGER, IS THAT IT’S VERY DRY AGAIN, VERY DRY CONDITIONS. WE’RE LOOKING AT HUMIDITIES THAT ARE CURRENTLY ABOUT 13 TO 15%. SO ANOTHER TIME, DRY CONDITIONS, NOT TOO BAD WINDS. THE TRAIN IS SUCH AS DRIVING THE WINDS. RIGHT NOW THE WINDS ARE PRETTY LIGHT BUT THEY’RE BLOWING IN ALL DIRECTIONS. MOST OF THE TIME THEY’RE BLOWING UPWARD OR DOWNWARD. SO AGAIN VERY DRY CONDITIONS, PRETTY LIGHT WINDS. But conditions are going to cool down even more with temperatures currently hovering around 70 degrees. The cloud cover that’s moving in is also helping to keep those temperatures down. And we’re seeing conditions change a little bit as we head into tomorrow. So that’s something to watch because we have a red flag warning posted for tomorrow. Most of those conditions are going to be on the eastern side of the Sierra. You can see some Alpine County and Mono County as well into Lassen County and then across into Nevada. West winds 20 to 25 miles per hour. Rappels up to 35 miles per hour. That’s going to bring the humidity down. WE’RE GOING TO SEE HUMIDITIES AS LOW AS 9% BY TOMORROW AFTERNOON. SO HERE’S A LOOK AT THE WIND GUST TIMELINE. THE STRONGEST WINDS WILL DEVELOP OVER THE SIERRA CREST. YOU’LL SEE THOSE ORANGE AREAS APPEAR. THAT’S WHERE WE’RE GOING TO HAVE WIND SPEEDS OF 30 MPH OR MORE. SO THE WINDS WILL BE STRONG. ALSO IN NEVADA. WE’LL SEE THOSE STRONG WINDS AND THOSE WINDS WILL DIMINISH

Evacuation warnings are in effect in Truckee due to a wildland fire that started near a shopping center. The Truckee Fire Department said the fire started behind the Safeway on Donner Pass Road. It is burning between the grocery store and the Coyote Moon Golf Course on Northwoods Boulevard. “We’re already in the planning stages for night crews and rescues tomorrow. We really don’t want any fires. We don’t want this to come back. We don’t want it to grow any bigger or anything like that. So we’re going to be out there overnight, and I guess the next day or two,” said Ryan Ochoa, Truckee Fire Protection District Battalion Chief. An evacuation map from genasys Protect shows the evacuation warning zone covers the area north of Interstate 80, between Innsbruck Avenue and Truckee Way. View the map here. The fire has grown to about 3 1/2 acres and burned all the way to the Coyote Moon Golf Course. “We have a water line all around the fire, and we have multiple retardant drops and multiple aircraft working on the fire as well. We have had three spot fires up to a quarter mile from the fire,” Ochoa said. A KCRA 3 crew is en route to the scene to gather more information. | MORE | A 2024 guide on how to prepare for wildfires in California Here are the top websites that are important to all Californians during wildfire season.
