Sales of electric vehicles are booming worldwide – but growth in North America is lagging behind the rest of the world.
Global sales of electric vehicles jumped from 29% to 5.6 million in the first four months of the year compared to the same period in 2024, according to data published Wednesday by the research company EV RHO Motion.
In April alone, 1.5 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide.
However, sales of electric vehicles in North America – the United States, China and Mexico – increased by only 5%, or 600,000 vehicles. Sales of electric battery vehicles in the region have increased by 7%, while plug-in hybrid sales increased by only 1%.
Tesla sold 128,100 vehicles in the United States in the first quarter of the year, down 8.6% compared to the same era last year and 21% less than 2023, according to COX automotive data.
It remains the largest brand EV despite its market share from 51% to 44% in the past year.
Mexico, meanwhile, was a positive point, sales of electric vehicles are almost doubled. Unlike their American counterparts, Mexican drivers can buy Chinese manufacturing vehicles.
In Europe, stricter emissions have increased by 25% of sales, with growth of more than 40% in countries like Italy, Spain and Germany.
“The EU is certainly the success of sales of electric vehicles in 2025 so far,” said Charles Lester, data director at Rho Motion.
“In China, this increase in sales from one year to the next is even higher at 35%, stimulated by the vehicle trade program.”
