European Parliament has done ‘a lot of damage’ to Europe, says MP

Seventy years after the forerunner of the European Union was founded, the bloc has done “a lot of damage” to the continent, a member of the European Parliament (MEP) said at an “anniversary” event.

Professor Ryszard Legutko, a Polish MEP who leads the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists group, notably lambasted the European Parliament for doing ‘a lot of damage’ to the continent during an anniversary event by the EU body which took place on Tuesday.

While many Eurocrats celebrated the parliament’s supposed role in Europe, Legutko lambasted the organization as having significantly harmed Europe, saying it now only operated to push left-wing politics.

“[T]bitter truth is that the European Parliament has done a lot of damage in Europe,” the Law and Justice party politician said amid gasps from the assembly.

Legutko, a Plato scholar and professor of philosophy, went on to accuse the body of promulgating a false belief that there is a single European ‘demos’ – that is, a common European nation capable of being properly represented in a single shared assembly – and warned that the body had been used as a vehicle to promote left-wing ideology without democratic accountability.

“He sent a false message, he represents the European demos. There are not, and there will be no European protests,” he said, adding that he has “infected Europe with shameless partisanship and the infection has become so contagious that it has spread to other institutions such as the European Commission”.

“Parliament has become a political vehicle for the left to impose its monopoly with its ferocious intolerance of any dissenting opinion,” continued the MEP. “It doesn’t matter how many times you say the word ‘diversity’. Diversity is becoming an endangered species in the European Union and especially in this House.”

“The idea that, say, Spanish, German, French, etc. MPs answerable to their own national electorates can dictate something to, shall we say, Hungarian society or any other society to which they cannot be held accountable and who cannot take them to task is just absurd,” he added.

“Call it what you want, but it’s not democracy.”

While the nearly four-minute speech seemed to cause shock and outrage among various people within the European Parliament building, Legutko’s sentiment that the body had caused harm to Europe while pushing a partisan agenda seems to be shared by a number of his fellow MPs. .

In a statement seen by Breitbart Europe, Identity and Democracy MEP Dr Gunnar Beck also criticized the European Parliament, saying it is now widely used by the unelected European Commission to push for greater centralization of the bloc. .

“We are failing to control,” remarked the Alternative für Deutschland (Alternative for Germany/AfD) politician.

“The European Parliament is not in a position to control [President of the European Commission Ursula] SMS from von der Leyen to the CEO of Pfizer and is deprived of information on the final beneficiaries of the 750 billion euros [Next Generation EU] bailout,” he alleged.

“Time and time again it [assembly] turned out to be the spokesperson for the [European] Commission based on the Chinese model and a catalyst for greater European integration,” continued Beck. “And now, following the conclusions of the Conference on the Future of Europe, the EU wants to give a final push to give this Parliament full powers of legislative initiative.”

“The result: more EU, more debt and the abolition of national sovereignty and our national borders,” warned the German representative.
