Nordic and Baltic leaders promise “firm” support to Ukraine
The leaders of eight Nordic states and Balts published a joint statement following the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
The leaders of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have declared that they “remain firm” in their support for Ukraine.
They also declared that they support all efforts, including those of Trump, “to end the war of Russian aggression against Ukraine”.
“Experience has shown that Putin cannot trust,” said leaders, adding that it is “Russia’s responsibility to end its flagrant violations of international law”.
During their meeting in Alaska, Putin said he had discussed with Trump “the deep causes” of the conflict, referring to Ukraine’s ambitions to join NATO and the European Union.
But the Nordic and Baltic joint declaration replied that “the aggression of Russia and imperialist ambitions are the profound causes of this war”.
They called for a cease-fire that would lead to a “just and lasting peace” and insisted that Ukraine and its European allies were involved in talks to end the war.
“No decision on Ukraine without Ukraine, and no decision on Europe without Europe,” the statement said.
They also called for “credible security guarantees for Ukraine”, stressing that any peace agreement “needs firm and concrete commitments from transatlantic partners to protect Ukraine against any future aggression”.
“No limitation should be imposed on the armed forces of Ukraine or on its cooperation with other countries,” they said, adding that they “will continue to arm Ukraine and improve the defenses of Europe to dissuade the new Russian attack”.
