Europe should keep the models of open source artificial intelligence or risk late, said the main scientist of Meta AI.
Yann Lecun said that Europe and some countries are trying to make the open source models illegal because they want to stay ahead of political rivals, which is a “huge error”.
He made the comments during his presentation at the top of the AI action in Paris on Monday.
“When you do a secret research, you are late,” said the French-American computer scientist. “The rest of the world will go open source and will exceed you. This is currently what is happening”

“We cannot afford that these systems come from a handful of companies from the west coast of the United States or China,” said Lecun on Monday.

The two companies criticized European proposals to regulate manufacturers of fundamental models. The legislators in their country of origin and in Italy have pressure for a framework in which model manufacturers are authorized to self -regulate so that they can compete with the giants of American technology.
The European Union artificial intelligence law, approved in 2024, aims to combat the risk associated with powerful AI technology. More recently, there has been a debate on how to regulate foundation models such as large languages under the law.
