Euro 2024 score, Xavi Simons goal

England and the Netherlands meet in the Euro 2024 semi-finals on Wednesday, with the winner advancing to Sunday’s final against Spain.

Tournament favourites England have scored just five goals in five games and had to equalise late to force extra time in their last knockout stage wins over Slovakia and Switzerland. The Netherlands beat Romania in the round of 16 (3-0) and Turkey (2-1) in the quarter-finals to prepare for the showdown with England.

“We are here for a reason, the Netherlands are here for a reason and may the best team win,” said England midfielder Declan Rice.

England have never won the Euros, finishing second in 2020, while the Netherlands won the tournament in 1988.

Goal! Harry Kane’s penalty makes it 1-1

After a VAR check deemed Denzel Dumfries to have fouled Harry Kane as he attempted a shot, Kane stepped up to the penalty spot and converted the equaliser in the 18th minute.

England’s all-time leading goalscorer, Kane failed to take a penalty in the quarter-final win over Switzerland and missed a spot kick that would have levelled the 2022 World Cup quarter-final against France.

Goal! Xavi Simons scores early for Netherlands

The Netherlands took the lead in the seventh minute when Xavi Simons scored with a rocket from outside the penalty area after England had been fouled.

Simons, 21, plays for Paris Saint-Germain and spent last season with RB Leipzig in Germany.

England vs Netherlands Prediction

Jim Reineking: Netherlands 2, England 1 – When will England inevitably collapse in a major international tournament? They had to beat Slovakia in the round of 16 (two late goals to win) and Switzerland in the quarter-finals (on penalties). England’s luck will run out on Wednesday against the Netherlands. Led by Golden Boot contender Cody Gakpo, the Netherlands have displayed a more potent attack than England so far (nine goals to the Three Lions’ five) and that will be the difference between reaching Sunday’s final against Spain.

Jesse Yomtov: England 1, Netherlands 1 (England win on penalties) – Say what you will about England’s progress to the semi-finals, but the team showed incredible determination in their two last-16 victories to equalise late on and force extra time against Slovakia and Switzerland. This game should be more open than some of England’s other games at this tournament and the Three Lions can be expected to be more dangerous in attack.

Tijjani Reijnders, star of the Netherlands

25-year-old midfielder Tijjani Reijnders has been a key player for the Netherlands at Euro 2024. He joined from AC Milan last season and has made 50 appearances in all competitions for the Italian giants.

Jude Bellingham has history with semi-final referee

German referee Felix Zwayer has been appointed to officiate the Euro 2024 semi-final between England and the Netherlands in Dortmund, and is an official Jude Bellingham has previously clashed with at the same stadium.

In 2021, while Bellingham was at Borussia Dortmund, the England midfielder was fined €40,000 for comments he made about Zwayer after his team’s 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.

“You can look at a lot of decisions that are made in a match. You give a referee who has already fixed a match the most important in Germany. What do you expect?” Bellingham said at the time.

His comments referred to a period in Zwayer’s career that he would have preferred to leave behind.

In 2005, referee Robert Hoyzer was sentenced to two years and five months in prison for his role in a match-fixing scandal that rocked German football, and although Zwayer was one of those who reported his suspicions, he was also punished.

Zwayer was banned for six months by the German Football Association (DFB) for accepting 300 euros from Hoyzer for agreeing to make incorrect decisions during a match while he was an assistant referee.

He took a short break after Bellingham’s comments, but has since refereed the 2023 Nations League final and at Euro 2024, Zwayer took charge of three games before the semi-final.

Have England ever won the Euros?

England have never won the European Championship. Their best result came in 2021, when they finished second after losing on penalties to Italy.

England player Declan Rice: ‘May the best team win’

Declan Rice is looking ahead to the Euro 2024 semi-final between England and the Netherlands with confidence and believes they have the momentum to beat the Dutch and win their first ever European Championship.

“It’s business as usual… I don’t put too much pressure on myself, I don’t think about it too much,” Rice told England’s Lions’ Den programme.

“We’re here for a reason, the Netherlands are here for a reason and may the best team win. It’s a game of football, we feel like we have some really good momentum on our side,” Rice added.

The statistics highlight Rice’s contribution for England, covering more distance in the tournament than any other player with 63.9 km (39.7 miles) in five games, with the fourth-highest number of tackles and ball recoveries.

Bukayo Saka, England kept relaxed with golf outing

Bukayo Saka was applauded for hitting the ball so accurately in England’s quarter-final win over Switzerland and did it again on his golfing debut at the weekend, even if his celebrations were marred by an embarrassing fall onto the golf bag.

It may have been beginner’s luck but Saka, who equalised against the Swiss and converted his penalty in the 5-3 shoot-out win, shone as England were treated to a round of golf on their day off on Sunday.

“Oh my God, that’s the best shot of my life,” Saka said after his first effort.

He also struck the ball well on his next attempt and, while receiving generous applause, he stumbled comically, prompting laughter and jeers from his team-mates. That distraction could be just what England need ahead of their semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday, where they will be aiming for their second successive Euro final.

England players back manager Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate is exactly what England need as a leader and he has instilled a sense of unity in a squad that has grown stronger during Euro 2024 and has never been more motivated, defender Luke Shaw said on Monday.

“He’s really taken us to the next level, no manager has really been as successful as him in what he’s done recently,” Shaw told a news conference.

Netherlands faces travel disruptions to Dortmund

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman shrugged off the travel disruptions his side faced on Tuesday and said the squad were well rested ahead of Wednesday’s European Championship semi-final against England.

The Dutch were forced to abandon plans to travel to Dortmund by train from their base in Wolfsburg after the service was cancelled due to a road blockage, the Dutch Football Association said.

Instead, they flew to Dortmund, arriving at their hotel about four hours later than planned.

“It was not a problem, we rested well this afternoon, we were on the plane for only 30 minutes, we arrived at our hotel and we can rest well tonight,” Koeman said in an interview with UEFA after his scheduled pre-match press conference had to be cancelled due to the travel delay.
