On the occasion of a press conference on June 24 during his trip to Azerbaijan, Sergueї Lavrov warned against a Russophobia which he attributed to the European Union, denouncing moreover the warmongering aims according to him of the NATO.
We have few illusions that the current Russophobic attitude of the European Union will disappear
“At the start of the Second World War, Hitler gathered under his banner a significant part, if not most, of the European countries to wage war against the Soviet Union. Now, in the same way, we are bringing together – the European Union with NATO in particular – a modern coalition to fight, and basically, to wage war on the Russian Federation”, he declared, is also pessimistic about a possible evolution of European diplomacy with regard to Russia.
“We have few illusions that the current Russophobic attitude of the European Union will disappear or change in any way in the near future or even, to put it honestly, in the long term” , indeed underlined the head of Russian diplomacy.
During his speech, the senior diplomat also reacted to the European Union’s decision the day before to grant EU candidate status to Ukraine and its neighbor Moldova. “The EU is not a political bloc like the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The development of its relations with any willing country does not create threats or risks for us,” he commented, quoted here by the Russian news agency TASS.
