The European Union’s plans to strengthen its defense are a potential threat to Russia, which could be forced to take countermeasures, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.
“All this militarization occurs mainly against Russia. This, of course, could potentially be a subject of profound concern for us,” Peskov told journalists, “reported Interfax Russian Interfax. He said the Kremlin might have to “take appropriate countermeasures to ensure our safety”.
“We see that the European Union is now very actively discussed from the subject of the militarization of the EU, the development of the defense segment in particular. These are processes that we closely monitor, because the European Union positions Russia as its main adversary,” he added.
The comments come after the 27 EU managers on Thursday at an emergency summit approved a proposal to considerably strengthen defense expenses up to 800 billion euros in the block using a range of new financing instruments.
Peskov also said that EU’s plans to “transform an economic alliance to a military alliance” could have a negative impact on the chances of concluding an agreement to put an end to the war in Ukraine.
“Such plans of conflicting and conflicting rhetoric that we now see in Brussels and in European capitals, of course, are seriously in contradiction with mood to find ways to resolve the situation around Ukraine peacefully,” said Peskov.
The EU’s proposal occurs while the United States seems to withdraw its commitments to Europe’s security. Washington suspended military aid to Ukraine on Monday after the disastrous meeting of the oval office last week between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
