The European Union plans to restrict imports of Russian products aluminum and phasing out the country’s liquefied natural gas under a new set of sanctions targeting Moscow over its large-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to people familiar with the matter.
The draft measures, which would be part of the bloc’s 16th set of sanctions, include restrictions on dozens of additional ships that are part of Moscow’s shadow fleet of tankers carrying Russian oil and additional controls on exports of goods used to military purposes. The move could also see more banks cut off from the SWIFT international payments system, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
