Esperanza’s Taylor Shumaker continued to challenge the Orange County record for most home runs in a softball season by hitting her 17th Saturday while nearly hitting for the cycle.

The Florida-bound senior went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and a home run in a 10-0 victory at Villa Park in the Crestview League.

Shumaker also drove in four runs and walked once to support Charley Duran, who pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Duran also had three of the Aztecs’ 17 hits.

The Orange County record for most home runs in a season is 20, set by Natalie Gleason of Capistrano Valley Christian in 2022.

Esperanza (12-9, 3-2) is tied for second place with El Modena in the Crestview League and has five regular-season games remaining.

In a non-league match:

Rosary 4, Huntington Beach 3: Nevaeh Trejo and Alisa Fair singled in the tying and go-ahead runs, respectively, in the seventh to lead the visiting Royals (16-5). Rosary did not face ace Zoe Prystajko but extended her winning streak to four matches.
