Erik Ten Hag rips FIVE of his ‘unprofessional’ Man United players for their failure to learn a lesson, leading to Michael Olise’s opener in their 4-0 demolition at Crystal Palace

Erik ten Hag was furious with five Manchester United players as he slammed their defense on a throw-in which led to Crystal Palace’s opener on Monday night.

The Red Devils suffered a brutal 4-0 defeat at Selhurst Park, the latest sting in a season that has been frustrating.

The United manager criticized his side’s performance, insisting his players “let themselves down”, while vowing to keep fighting despite pressure over his future.

He was particularly unhappy with the way they conceded their first goal, after Palace broke through United’s defense after a throw-in before Michael Olise put the ball into the back of the net.

Ten Hag said after the match: “Professionals should not allow this. This was such an easy gift goal.

“Five players over the ball during a throw-in and it’s not the first time this season.

“I know we have young players, but even young players should learn when they play in the first team, to take responsibility.”

Ten Hag did not name the players he was attacking, although Jamie Carragher’s analysis on Sky Sports after the match referred to who he thought the Dutchman was talking to.

The players highlighted by Carragher were Kobbie Mainoo, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Christian Eriksen, Alejandro Garnacho and Mason Mount.

Carragher said he would “discuss night and day with Erik ten Hag” that Eriksen’s position during the throw-in was poor, as the veteran Danish midfielder marked an opposition player where the ball would not go not.

He then added: “What is Wan-Bissaka doing there, just doing nothing? He could easily enter there (in front of Jean-Phillipe Mateta) and Mainoo can enter there (in front of Olise).

“But again, leadership, organization, no one takes responsibility. Eriksen is thrown to the ground, Casemiro was just a joke, how can he run that far without anyone coming near him (Olise ).’

Added Monday Night Football guest pundit Ashley Young: “You expect to have a build-up. You expect them to communicate.

Carragher also insisted veteran defenders Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jonny Evans should have told young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to move more centrally towards Olise.

“If Crystal Palace throws the ball back you can go back up the pitch, they won’t hurt you.

“But when you leave that big space, it’s just crazy to leave that much space, wherever they want to throw it, and nobody scores and nobody talks.”

The young player mentioned by Ten Hag in his interview appears to be Mainoo, who has impressed this season after breaking into the first team.

Carragher said: “He thinks he’s doing a good job, he’s trying to protect himself. You have Wan-Bissaka and Jonny Evans, two experienced players and they have to tell him to move.

United’s defense didn’t improve much as Olise scored a second goal, with Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell also scoring in a dominant win for the Eagles.

Ten Hag’s side face Arsenal, Newcastle and Brighton in their last three league matches, before facing Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
