The 54-year-old is expected to be joined by fellow Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy as the former United striker continues talks over a return to Old Trafford as manager.

Van Nistelrooy has held talks with Burnley over the vacant managerial role at Turf Moor created by Vincent Kompany’s move to Bayern Munich, but is said to be excited by the prospect of joining United.

The former PSV Eindhoven boss would be given a senior role within the Ten Hag coaching staff if he decides to return, which could have implications for current assistants Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren , or for forwards coach Benni McCarthy.
