Erik ten Hag calls on Man United to sign defender, midfielder and striker this summer to return to top four – despite sacking after FA Cup final

Erik ten Hag has asked Manchester United to sign a defender, a midfielder and a striker this summer.

As Mail Sport reported on Friday, the Dutchman is expected to be fired after Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City, regardless of the result.

However, Ten Hag remains adamant that he remains in the plans of new Man United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team since the petrochemical billionaire took over as head of football operations in February .

He urged the club to spend during this summer’s transfer window and strengthen in several positions if they are to secure a place in the top four next season.

“We need to recruit an additional striker this summer. And if we can bring in another central midfielder and a replacement for Varane, things are looking good again. If the team stays fit, we can try to aim for the top 4 again,” said Ten Hag while speaking to VI.

United have been hampered by defensive injuries this season, with players like Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane spending much of the season on the sidelines.

The latter has been confirmed to leave as a free agent next month after three years at the club.

United’s midfield has also faced problems this season, with £55million signing Mason Mount limited to just 19 appearances in all competitions due to injuries.

Meanwhile, Casemiro has failed to replicate the levels he displayed in his first season at Old Trafford and could move to Saudi Arabia.

Benfica’s highly-rated midfielder Joao Neves is said to be a target for United as a replacement for the Brazilian.

Ten Hag’s side also struggled to score goals, with Rasmus Hojlund being the club’s only senior center forward.

The Danish international has been inconsistent but has scored 16 goals in all competitions.
