New York City Mayor Eric Adams met with President-elect Donald J. Trump near his Mar-a-Lago resort Friday afternoon in an unusual display of political, and perhaps personal, outreach.
The men ate lunch in the main dining room at Trump International Golf Course, in a group that included Mr. Trump’s son, Eric; Steve Witkoff, the billionaire New York real estate executive whom Mr. Trump named his special envoy to the Middle East; and Frank Carone, close advisor to the mayor.
The meeting lasted an hour, according to a person who witnessed the gathering, and the men dined buffet-style near where Sylvester Stallone, whom Mr. Trump just named as one of his three “special ambassadors,” in Hollywood, received. lunch.
The surprise trip to Florida by Mr. Adams, a Democrat who faces an uphill re-election battle this year, comes as the mayor faces a trial in April on federal corruption charges.
Mr. Trump, a Republican, said last month that he would consider granting Mr. Adams a pardon, arguing that both men had been “persecuted” by politically motivated prosecutors.
Mr. Adams said in a statement Friday evening that he and Mr. Trump had a “productive conversation” covering the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, creating manufacturing jobs in the Bronx and federal investments in infrastructure.
