A school -aged child died in a Texas hospital where he received a processing for measles, marking the second death of a minor in the state linked to the current epidemic.
“We are deeply saddened to point out that a child of school age who has recently been diagnosed with measles has died. The child received treatment for the complications of measles when he was hospitalized,” said Aaron Davis, vice-president of the UMC health system in Lubbock, Texas, CNN in a press release.
“It is important to note that the child was not vaccinated against measles and had no known underlying health problem,” he continued.
A Trump administration official told New York Times that the child’s death was “still examined”.
The first death of Texas measles linked to the current epidemic was in a child of school not vaccinated in February. A death at New Mexico remains under investigation.
CNN did not immediately hear the requests for information sent to the Ministry of Health of Texas and to the United States Ministry of Health and Social Services.
The epidemic – which now covers Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and perhaps Kansas – reached at least 569 cases on Friday, according to data obtained from state health services.
Texas reported on Friday 481 cases associated with the epidemic. Almost all were not vaccinated and 70% were among the children and adolescents. Many of these cases broke out in western Texas, the county of sheaths representing almost 66% of cases.
In the County of Lubbock, which represents almost 7% of the confirmed cases of the State, the UMC Health began to offer screening of driving measles in its two urgent care centers 24/7.
Meanwhile, the New Mexico reported 54 cases and Oklahoma reported 10 cases – eight confirmed and two likely – Friday. Business in Kansas, which, according to the State Department of Health, can be linked to the epidemic, reached 24 from Wednesday.
Many of these cases are among non-vaccinated people, and experts say that the figures are probably a serious sub-account because many cases are not reported.
With most cases reported among minors, experts care to increase hospitalizations, especially in young children who are more at risk of complications.
“The more children who get the illness means that there are a good chance that there are more sick children with the complications of measles,” said Dr. Christina Johns, pediatric emergency doctor at PM Pediatrics in Annapolis, Maryland.
The American senator Bill Cassidy, who is a doctor, called senior health officials on Sunday to approach the measles epidemic.
“Everyone should be vaccinated! There is no treatment for measles. No advantage in obtaining measles. Health managers should say unequivocal b / 4 another child dies,” wrote Cassidy on X.
The Secretary of Health and Social Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, minimized the gravity of the epidemic and was faced with the agency’s response.
Kennedy’s response to the epidemic was “abyssal,” said Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Philadelphia Children’s Hospital.
Offer highlighted the story of the secretary to tear vaccines and minimize the risk of measles.
“The disease has returned because a critical percentage of parents has chosen not to vaccinate their children, largely because of the disinformation provided by people like RFK JR,” he said.
