Epic Games CEO vows to ‘fight’ Apple over ‘absurd’ changes

It seems that the latest conflict between Apple and Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, is not over.

Epic has been battling Apple for years over its App Store revenue-sharing requirements. While Epic’s antitrust lawsuit against Apple was dismissed last year, many of its criticisms were echoed in a separate lawsuit filed against Apple in March by the Justice Department and 17 state attorneys general.

In Europe, the new Digital Markets Act has apparently allowed Epic to launch its own Epic Games Store on iOS and bring Fortnite back to the platform, with reduced commissions for Apple. However, Apple reportedly rejected the game store twice due to elements it deemed too similar to its own App Store, particularly the “install” and “in-app purchase” buttons.

After Epic went public on Friday with its complaints about Apple’s “arbitrary and obstructive” rejections and said it had raised its concerns with European regulators, Apple approved the game store but said Epic would still have to make changes in a future update.

All settled? Not quite. Epic then announced it was “challenging” Apple, along with founder and CEO Tim Sweeney in writing that the story had “taken an absurd turn.”

“Apple is now telling reporters that this approval is temporary and requires us to change the buttons in the next version — which would make our store less standard and harder to use,” Sweeney said. “We’re going to fight this.”

This likely means that Epic will resist making further changes to its game store. We’ll see if the company holds firm and how Apple might respond.
