Enemies can enter military communications. Marine General wants a quantum correction.

US military communications are vulnerable, and marines know that the results can be fatal if the enemy obtains its data on data once considered secure.

“We must find a way to obtain the promise of quantum communications in place,” said Lieutenant-General Stephen D. Sklenka, who is assistant body commander, installations and logistics. Sklenka, as well as the leaders of the logistics of the army and the navy, spoke in the context of a panel on combat logistics Thursday during the modern expo navy.

With the rise of new threats to communications, managers cannot simply count on the transition to different networks to keep information, he said, explaining that he wants to see the networks become “undesirable” by adopting a technology which is still to its beginnings but which seems ready to deeply change war: quantum communications.

Secure quantum communication provides unmatched protection of sensitive communications by giving them unbreakable encryption, but this capacity is still under development.

“We are all mainly operating on the non -clear net,” said Sklenka, referring to the non -classified network of the Ministry of Defense.

Although “secret” information is distributed via a fully different network, many sensitive details, including data on unit and staff and equipment, can be shared on non -classified networks, making it a very desirable target for enemy penetration.

“It is a vulnerable network. We know that our opponents are there,” he said.

It is still early for emerging quantum technology, which also includes quantum IT and quantum detection.

A study in 2021 estimated the level of technology that the Ministry of Defense would find the most useful is still years of development, although American companies like IBM, Amazon and Google rush to exploit emerging technology.

The rapidly evolving field remains deeply technical, expensive for researchers, and not yet particularly useful for anyone outside of certain circles.

What is on the horizon: a new era of super -ordinators which can considerably exceed current systems in a still unknown way which will probably transform the company – including military operations.

The Advanced Research research project agency, Darpa, also pays attention. The Research and Military Development Agency has current quantum initiatives, including one which focuses on the realization of quantum functioning on the scale of public services by 2033 and others focused on research to build parts required for quantum computer science.

Part of the quantum transformation will inevitably include encryption methods, which researchers already know will become obsolete in their current state.

“Everything connected to the Internet will probably have problems,” said Karl Holmqvist, CEO of Lastwall, a supplier of cybersecurity of quantum resilient technology used by the DOD, in an interview with Business Insider earlier this year.

The spectacular changes posed by quantum technology certainly take place in the national security sphere, from financial markets to the battlefields for the Navies, as well as the DOD with remedé of other major problems which could have an impact on the way in which it fights against a war, including too little and more ships.

“I have to understand how to make sure that the bad guys cannot understand it, so even if they capture this data, they are garbage for them,” said Sklenka. But at the same time, he said, American forces still need to use the networks and share this information with allied soldiers that American troops can fight.
