Encinitas will make its director of the current city, Jennifer Campbell, its new director of the permanent city, rather than carrying out an external recruitment search to fill the place.
The Council voted unanimously to choose Campbell during a special and closed session advertising on Wednesday, and will vote on its new salary and benefits at the meeting of the March 19, said Mayor Bruce Ehlers on Thursday. There is a meeting of the Council next week, but this program has already been set, so this article will wait for the following week, he said.
Ehlers said that the members of the Council had a list of qualities they were looking for, ranging from experience in the direction of the City of California and working with the Coastal Commission of the State to be fiscally responsible and not to be someone who “would play one side against another”.
“In fact, most of them had everything,” he said by describing articles on their list.
Campbell is a high-energy and “practical” person who has demonstrated leadership skills both in his recent role as director of the interim city and her previous role as director of the assistant city, he added.
She was appointed director of the interim city in mid-December after the city announced that the director of the time, Pamela Antil and the Council, had “agreed amicable” to end the employment of antil. His departure came just after the November elections when the majority of the council changed.
As part of this quarter of work, Ehlers was elected mayor, leaving its seat of the Vacant District 4 Council. The Council has since appointed the member of the Council Marco San Antonio to fulfill this position. The decision on which would be the next municipal director has been postponed for several months until the district 4 headquarters can be completed and the five members of the council could vote on the article, noted Ehlers on Thursday.
Campbell started working for the city of Encinitas in 2016; became deputy municipal director in 2021; And has almost 30 years of experience in the work of the municipal government, a new press release from the city said.
Previously, she worked as an assistant City City in Glendale, Arizona, and “has solid experience in the management of parks and leisure”, including a baccalaureate in leisure management and a master’s degree in education by emphasizing public administration, the press release continues.
In this press release, Campbell said that she was both “honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as director of the city”.
While Ehlers said Thursday that he had heard a lot of praise for his management capacity and had witnessed his skills during recent city meetings, the Council received an anonymous email from someone who seems to be an employee of the city who opposes the decision to hire the Council. In this email, which was attached to the announcement of the meeting on Wednesday, the person wrote that Campbell did not have the temperament for the position and that the post should go to an employee of the city with more experience or to someone who currently manages one of the other cities of the County of San Diego.
Ehlers said he thought that the message sent certainly does not represent the opinions of most employees in the city.
“I see the majority of staff very satisfied with the choice,” he said.
