Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons to star in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia

A day after the premiere of his latest film at the Cannes Film Festival, Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film was announced. The director will direct Bugoniawith Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, who direct his latest film Kinds of kindness.

Will Tracy’s screenplay follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the powerful CEO of a major corporation, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

Bugonia was picked up by Focus Features for the United States, and Universal Pictures is distributing it internationally. This sees Lanthimos leaving his recent home of Searchlight, which has released many of his films, including Oscar winners. Poor things And The Favorite as well as the next Kinds of Kindness.

Bugonia is based on the 2003 South Korean science fiction comedy, Let’s save the green planetwith the English version developed by CJ ENM by Miky Lee with Midday director Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen at Square Peg.

Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe will produce for Element Pictures, alongside Lanthimos, Aster, Knudsen, Stone and Lee and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko for CJ ENM.

Stone, who also worked with Lanthimos on The favourite And Poor thingsand Plemons both appear in Kinds of Kindnessreleased on June 26, a film told in three parts. The Hollywood ReporterThe Cannes review from Cannes reads: “Watching Lanthimos, one feels invigorated by the opportunities of the tripartite structure and the possibility of subverting the rules of society and storytelling. It may not be as thematically cohesive upon first viewing as some audiences would like, but the longer you think about it, the more the pieces of the puzzle begin to fit together and the common threads begin to emerge.
