Elton John and Brandi Carlile discuss the collaborative LP on “Fallon”

Elton John and Brandi Carlile appeared on The Tonight Show To tell how their spouse LP, Who believes in angels?has become. John described having received a letter from Carlile while making his residence in Las Vegas almost 20 years ago, noting that he “already knew who she was”.

“She wrote a letter to me and explained that she was a fan of mine since she was a child,” John told Fallon. “And I was the reason she wanted to make music. And Bernie’s words were the reason she wanted to write words.”

The letter asked if John would never plan to play on one of Carlile’s pieces and he called it to say yes and invited it to Las Vegas. “The minute she arrived in the studio, I fell in love with her,” he admitted. “And I fell in love with his talent, his voice. But more than that, I fell in love with the person. And we have become firm friends. We are like a family. ”

John added that he likes “to cooperate with new people”, so to answer Carlile was “obvious”. “It was a moment of serendipity,” he noted. “Since I knew her, I have always wanted to record with her.”

The duo has also described writing and recording Who believes in angels?which has come out now. John said they went to the studio without prepared anything because it is how he tackles collaboration these days. “I knew how I wanted it to sound, but you can’t plan this,” he said. “It was therefore very anxious. And there was a lot of tension in the first three or four days of the album.”

Carlile added: “I also had all this self -doubt, and it manifests itself really differently in me than Erton. I felt very calm and internal in these first days. But it did not take long before realizing that it worked. ”

John and Carlile recorded Who believes in angels? With Bernie Taupin and Andrew Watt. They started working on the album in October 2023 and were supported by a group of stars that includes Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Pino Pallindo (Nine Inch Nails) and Josh Klinghofer (Pearl Jam, Beck).
