Tesla has recalled nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks to repair an accelerator pedal pad that could come loose and become stuck in the interior trim.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Friday that the company will replace or repair the accelerator pedal assembly free of charge and that owners will be notified through letters sent to them in June.
The recall comes after a new Tesla owner shared the design flaw in a video, saying the pedal cover slipped forward and trapped the accelerator under the interior which was held down at 100%.
However, the NHTSA report found that the company founded by Elon Musk received complaints from customers before the clip hit the Internet.

The recall comes as hundreds of Cybertruck owners have reported that their delivery appointments have been canceled – and left in the dark about when shipments will resume.
NHTSA said 3,878 Cybertrucks were affected by the recall.
Many buyers had received messages that their deliveries had been canceled weeks before Tesla called to remove electric vehicles from the road.
Musk only acknowledged this in a comment on a Whole Mars Catalog item (WINE).
The billionaire said: “There were no injuries or accidents due to this. We’re just being very careful.
But it now appears that deliveries have not resumed due to Friday’s recall.
“An unapproved change introduced lubricant (soap) to facilitate assembly of the pad components to the accelerator pedal. Residual lubricant reduced pad retention on the pedal,” NHTSA explained in the recall document.
Tesla shares fell nearly 3% before the bell on Friday, adding to its five-session losing streak in which the stock lost about 14%.
In the first quarter of 2024, the electric vehicle maker issued three recalls affecting approximately 2.4 million vehicles, according to a report from recall management company BizzyCar.
The NHTSA recall report states: “If the accelerator pedal pad becomes stuck in the interior trim above the pedal, the performance and operation of the pedal will be affected, which may increase the risk of collision.
“Note that application of the brake pedal will reduce drive torque, including when both the brake and accelerator pedals are depressed, and that continued application of the brake pedal will stop the vehicle as quickly as if the accelerator pedal was not depressed. »
Cybertrucks have been seen piling up at Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory in recent days after deliveries were halted.

The report states that Tesla received a customer complaint notice regarding the pedal cover on March 31 and a second on April 2.
Tesla engineers conducted reviews and tests related to the allegations and determined on April 12 that a voluntary recall would be announced.
“As of April 15, 2024, Tesla is not aware of any collisions, injuries, or fatalities related to this condition,” the NHTS said.
All Tesla stores and service centers are expected to be notified of the recall on Friday.
However, the report states that the expected date for notification to owners is not until June 18.
The recall also gave an idea of how many Cybertrucks were delivered, as Musk has not made the numbers public.
