President Donald Trump may have run his last race, but that doesn’t mean that Elon Musk has campaigned.
Musk will go to Wisconsin on Sunday, a few days before a Supreme Court race which could move the balance of the highest courtyard in the state. Faithful to his word, the richest man in the world cements his status of one of the greatest megadonors of the GOP in an out -of -year election which drew significant national attention.
Musk and his America PAC have spent more than $ 12 million so far for the non -partisan Supreme Court race to help conservative judge Brad Schimel. The Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, gathered behind the liberal judge Susan Crawford.
More than $ 80 million has been spent, helping the most expensive judicial elections in the history of the United States – supplanting a Wisconsin court only two years ago.
“The two parties make an argument to make it a referendum on Donald Trump or Elon Musk, as the case may be,” said professor of the Faculty of Marquette, Chad Oldfather, at Business Insider. “It is in a way the first election of consequences in the Trump era, so I think people are looking for signs here on how the population reacts to everything.”
Oldfather, who studies the constitutional law of the state, said that the presence of Musk had given this race a different feeling.
“We had external money entering these races in the past, I suppose what distinguishes the Musk that Musk is not at all minimizing his role,” said Oldfather.
Tesla continues to open dealerships in the state, fighting a state law which does not allow car manufacturers to sell directly to consumers. (This is a frequent problem for the company of Musk.) Musk and almost all the other major characters who have weighed on the race is more concerned with what the seven judges can do that will have national effects.
“We are trying to prevent Wisconsin Democrats from withdrawing two seats from the house,” Musk told Fox News, Bret Bret Baier during an interview for “Special Report”.
If Schimel loses, Musk said: “We could lose control of the chamber and all government reforms could be closed.”
The GOP holds a majority of 6 to 2 in the delegation of the House of Representatives of Wisconsin. The story shows that the president’s party generally loses seats. Gop has a thin majority at home, which means that it cannot afford to see more districts become more competitive.
Musk is not difficult to miss in the state.
Crawford and his allies have repeatedly highlighted Musk’s expenses in the race. The Wisconsin Democrats website has a splash page that shows Musk as Schimel puppet master.
“Elon Musk is the most unpopular active national figure in Wisconsin policy, and the more voters see that the man who attacks social security and their health care pay millions of dollars to help Brad Schimel, the more the voters are rabid about the idea of someone who tries to buy our Supreme State Court,” said the president of the Democrats of Wisconsin, Inside.
After Musk announced his initial gift, Crawford’s campaign wrote on X: “Brad Schimel and Elon Musk are corrupt.”
In response to Crawford, the Schimel’s campaign said that their opponent herself had many well-armed supporters, including George Soros, Bernie Sanders and Hakeem Jeffries.
“”The attempts of Susan Crawford and Democrats to distract the people of the Wisconsin of their extreme opinions and the radical billionaires who finance it are a mockery of hypocrisy, “said Jacob Fischer, spokesperson for the Schimel campaign, in a statement to Business Insider.
The president of the Wisconsin Republican Party, Brian Schimming, described the focus on Musk’s expenses “a diversion”.
“It’s a way for them to make shots at Donald Trump and Elon Musk,” Schinm told Business Insider. “There is no lack of money that have entered the Wisconsin over the years that has greatly exceeded Elon Musk.”
According to a survey of the Faculty of Law of the Marquette on March 5, Musk has a percentage point approval rating of -12 in Wisconsin. The same respondents only slightly disapproved (-3 percentage points) from the first six weeks of Trump in power. Trump won the state last November, part of his swing state scan on vice-president Kamala Harris who brought him back to the White House. A few days before election day, Trump announced his approval as Schimel.
As in the 2024 elections, Musk’s campaign also attracts the opposition. Friday, he wrote on X that he would personally award two voters to $ 1 million in checks during the Sunday Rally. He then deleted the tweet and later said that the checks were for the participants who had agreed to become a spokesperson for an America PAC petition through the state. Musk’s political outfit had previously promised to give $ 100 to the voters who signed the petition against judicial activism.
The attorney general of the Wisconsin, Josh Kaul, a democrat, said that he would dispute Musk’s gift before the court. The Wisconsin law prohibits anyone from giving “something of value” to voters, which led certain experts in elections to conclude that Musk’s efforts were illegal.
It is unlikely that national attention will be made for a long time.
Wisconsin judges have 10 -year -old mandates. Due to the only retirement, the State will organize several elections of the Supreme Court over the next five years. Meanwhile, the current race seems almost essential, said the old man.
“It’s a deluge,” he said, “whenever you turn on the TV, every time you shoot YouTube, each you open your mailbox, whenever your phone has an SMS.”
