The polarizing passage of Elon Musk who struck and denigrate the federal bureaucracy will probably end soon, the richest government service in the world reaching its legal limit in the coming weeks.
“He has a big business to run … At one point, he will go back,” Donald Trump told journalists on Monday.
“I would keep it as long as I could keep it,” added the president.
As an employee of the special government, Musk faces a strict 130 -day ceiling on its service – probably expiring at the end of May if it is counted from the day of the inauguration, despite the previous pretensions of the White House, Musk was “here to stay”.
The initiates of the administration declared Wednesday in Politico that Musk would indeed leave its main role in the coming weeks.
But Musk described the report as “false news” and the press secretary of the White House, Karoline Leavitt, said on Wednesday that the history of politico was “garbage”.
“Elon Musk and President Trump both publicly declared that the Elon was starting from the public service as an employee of the special government when her incredible work in Doge is finished,” she said.
The White House did not immediately respond to the request for comments from the Guardian.
While Musk is looking for the exit door, his “Ministry of Effectiveness of the Government” (DOGE) should continue until 2026 under the executive order of Trump, and high -level leaders installed by Musk to manage government agencies are likely to survive the billionaire’s mandate in the public service.
DOGE has exploited figuratively – and once literally – with a “chainsaw” through government agencies since Musk joined Trump’s team as a high -level employee not adapted in January.
DOGE has since triggered large -scale layoffs of civic functions, including around 10,000 people at the Ministry of Health and Social Services this week, while moving to eliminate entire agencies such as USAID -focused on humanitarian and Overlet Global Outlet Office of America supported by the State.
According to the New York Times, around 56,000 federal jobs were reduced to January 20 and 75,000 others, with at least 171,000 other expected reductions, according to the New York Times.
The huge cuts did not go well, according to a new survey of the Marquette Law School, which revealed that only 41% of the American public approves Doge’s work, while Musk’s personal sympathy was even lower, at 38%.
A Quinnipiac survey in mid-March revealed that more than half of the country believed that Musk and Doge harm in the United States.
DOGE already claims $ 140 billion in savings – although journalists in the eyes of the eagle have identified significant errors in these calculations. Musk told Fox News that he expected to do “most of the work necessary to reduce the 1 TN deficit” before the expiration of his time.
The billionaire’s involvement has raised significant concerns about conflicts of interest given the vast government contracts of its companies, although as an employee of the special government, its financial disclosure forms remain confidential.
The almost closed USAID had launched an investigation into agency surveillance on Starlink terminals sent to Ukraine, the Consumer Finance Protection Office was targeted for almost a week after having published a rule that would put technological companies such as X – which provided for a partnership with Visa – in its reticulation compared to the regulations, and many other agency attacks.
Democrats have increasingly targeted Musk politically, more recently criticizing its investment of more than $ 20 million in a breed in the Supreme Wisconsin Court. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker broke the record for the long speech in the history of the Senate after more than 24 hours of seasoning Trump and Musk.
