Elon Musk appeared alongside President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Tuesday to defend the cuts made by the Government Ministry of Efficiency, or Doge.
Musk, who directs Doge, said that the cups made by the agency were not “draconian” and that they represented changes in “common sense” that would make the government more effective.
Musk, who was joined by his son X, reiterated his position that the Americans voted for the changes that Doge brought. “They will get what they voted for,” he said.
“And if you have the bureaucrat rule, if bureaucracy is really in charge, the meaning really is democracy,” said Musk. “If the people cannot vote and have their will decided by their elected officials in the form of the president, the Senate and the Chamber, then we do not live in a democracy.”
Trump wondered why federal judges would seek to block some of Doge’s efforts.
“Now, an activist judge wants to try to prevent us from doing this,” said Trump. “Why would they try to do this? I campaigned on this subject.”
Musk previously wrote on X that a federal judge should be charged after a decision temporarily blocked DOGE staff to access the sensitive files of the Treasury Department. Vice-President JD Vance and the main republicans of the Congress said that the judges went beyond their authority in reining among Doge workers, suggesting that Trump could simply ignore their decisions.
Journalists from the Oval Office interviewed Musk on Tuesday on Doge’s transparency and how the richest man in the world sails on potential conflicts of interest for his range of companies, which have collectively received billions of contracts federal over the years.
Musk said Doge is “as transparent as possible”. He underlined the updates that the outfit published on his official account X. He also declared that Doge publishes on his activities on his official government website, however, Tuesday afternoon, Doge.gov does not contain any new information.
“All our actions are maximum transparent,” said Musk.
A Doge spokesman recently said that Doge was under the law on presidential files, which means that Musk and the work of his staff could remain deprived for the years to come.
