Elon Musk Confirms Tesla Robotaxi Event Has Been Postponed to October

Elon Musk confirmed Monday that Tesla’s robotaxi event scheduled for August has been postponed until October. The CEO responded on X (the former Twitter, which he owns) to a user’s post that he “requested what I think is a significant design change on the front end, and the extra time allows us to show a few more things.”

Musk’s X-rated post seems to echo what Bloomberg Last week, the publication claimed that the event delay would give Tesla more time to build additional prototypes. It added that the company had communicated the delay internally and that the design team had been tasked with “reworking certain elements of the car,” which sounds like Elon Musk’s order to change the front-end design.

The CEO said in early April that the company would unveil the Tesla Robotaxi on August 8. The teaser arrived the same day Reuters reported that Tesla was pulling the plug on a planned $25,000 budget model (often referred to externally as the Model 2) in favor of an all-out push toward robotaxis. Musk claimed Reuters “lied” without listing specific points of contention.

A few weeks later, Tesla laid off “more than 10%” of the company’s (then) 140,000 employees. Two weeks after announcing the layoffs, the electric vehicle maker fired two senior executives, while Elon Musk warned staff that “we have to be absolutely committed to reducing headcount and costs.” In what sounded like a threat, he added: “While some senior executives are taking this seriously, most are not yet.”

Tesla delivered nearly 7% fewer vehicles in the first half of 2024 and produced nearly 15% fewer in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2023.
