The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has created a system for private aircraft owners to request that their registration information – including their name and address – be kept private. This can have an impact on private celebrity jet trackers, which used FAA recording information to identify the jets belonging to Elon Musk and Taylor Swift.
The new FAA system has been mandated by the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which gave the organization for two years to establish a procedure for aircraft owners and operators to ask any “personally identifiable information” is made private. The FAA says that it is also a question of “evaluating” whether to go further and be lacking to keep this private information. The law became the law in May 2024 under the Biden administration.
The change will probably make it more difficult to exploit celebrity jets, which use the FAA recording information to identify private jets belonging to celebrities so that their flight roads can be followed. Accounts monitoring the use of jets by Musk, Swift, Mark Zuckerberg, Kim Kardashian and more have become viral in the past, but have seen prohibitions on platforms belonging to Musk and Zucck. In 2023, Taylor Swift sent a cease-up to Jack Sweeney letter, which operated a number of popular jet trackers.
