Elizabeth Olsen wants her work to better reflect his taste: NPR

A note from Joker Rachel Martin host: Being a supervillain is exhausting. You spend a lot of energy thinking about how to play with your enemies. The use of your real superpowers is completely exhausting. And once you are in this super-villain box, it can be difficult to escape. Unless you are Elizabeth Olsen. It appeared for the first time in the Marvel cinematographic universe about ten years ago as Wanda Maximoff. And by 2021, she was flying around wreaking havoc as a scarlet witch Wandavision.

And although Olsen did not close the door on this character, we have definitely seen his talent taking place in completely different directions in recent years. For my part, I am sort of obsessed with its performance in the Netflix show Love and death From 2023. She plays a sweet and loving housewife who brutally murdered her husband’s lover. And when I looked at how Elizabeth Olsen owned all the contradictions of this character at the same time, I knew that I was going to see much more of her.

His new film is called EvaluationAnd in her, Elizabeth plays a woman in the not so distant future, living in a kind of protected society because the earth has been destroyed, and she must pass this nightmare from a test to have the possibility of having a baby.

This interview with the Joker was published for duration and clarity. Host Rachel Martin asks randomly selected questions from a card game. Press Play above to listen to the full podcast or read an extract below.

Question 1: What did someone told you who changed your trajectory?

Elizabeth Olsen: I did not have mentors growing up and I felt like I was very motivated and I did not listen to many opinions of people in my family, and I did not stop doing what I wanted to do.

Rachel Martin: Have your parents trying to prevent you from acting? I mean, we just have to recognize that your two older sisters were Full houseMary-Kate and Ashley. And so it’s not like it was completely foreign to you, this world.

Olsen: No not at all. There are six of us in my father’s house and four at my mother’s. And so you are just in a way when you have so many children in your family, which is why it is difficult for me to think of something that has really created a different trajectory. I mean, there are definitely “telling you moments” of other people who have given me advice. For example, there are certainly things that I could have learned, but I needed to make mistakes myself before taking advice blindly because I am stubbornly and I needed to understand it.

Martin: Is there an example that you would be ready to share a piece of advice that you did not take?

Olsen: Um, no. Because to tell you the truth, all the good advice I have ignored and that I might have benefited from my sisters and it always becomes a story so bigger when I present things they have told me.

Martin: It’s ok. I understand. It’s a strange thing. Growing up in this dynamic with these particular brothers and sisters.

Olsen: Especially because we all live our life in a very private way. And so when it comes to my work and it pivots and I have the impression of the cords in something they have not written to me, it is when I feel bad.

Martin: Yeah, totally. I respect that. But it’s nice to hear, of course, as the sisters do, they gave you advice and you could take it or not take it.

Olsen: And I could have benefited from taking it.

Question 2: What do you still think that you should prove to the people you meet?

Olsen: My taste. I think I have not always managed to make choices in my work that is aligned with my personal taste and it is something that I have the impression of trying to prove when I meet people.

Martin: Because you didn’t really want to be a superhero?

Olsen: I mean, I did, actually. When I started Marvel, I thought the movies were so, so great. I thought it was so great stories on the Greek type which reflected politics and culture in a really beautiful way. And so I really felt proud to jump into it. And then, in the past 10 years, he has taken this story of, it is like a hot catch, that an actor says that he would never make a Marvel film or not.

Martin: But what don’t you feel safe?

Olsen: I think that is why – because I have spent so many years Marvel that I have the impression that all my other jobs must really reflect my personal taste because, as much as I like to be part of this world and I am proud of what I could do with the character, it is not really the art that I consume. Of which I was very honest. And so, I feel like I really have to focus on what to associate all these films and show that I do with Marvel to show my taste.

Question 3: Do you think there is more of the reality that we cannot see or feel?

Olsen: My instinct is to say yes. I recently became – not obsessed, but very interested – trying to find a language of non -tangible things which, I believe, are real. And I don’t like the word “spirituality”, personally.

Martin: How is it?

Olsen: I have the impression that there are a lot of things, there are just a lot of connotations that I put there that have to see with sets of belief that I do not feel aligned.

Martin: Can you give me an example of belief that you let go of it or something that does not suit you for the construction of spirituality?

Olsen: Like, moon circles? Like, when people celebrate the full moon. I don’t really believe in the power of these icons. Or organized religions, which, I think, is, you know, ideal for people.

Martin: But neither of them seems to you to be at home – like a moon ceremony or an organized religion.

Olsen: No. And yet the word I have now adopted is “timeless”. For example, there is the temporal body and the timeless body, which are the things that we cannot quantify, uh, as you cannot quantify love, uh, you cannot quantify creativity, but it exists as part of a person.
