What do you want to know?
- The most popular Elden Ring mod is Seamless Co-op, a project that removes restrictions like barriers between areas and other obstacles that make cooperative multiplayer tedious.
- The seamless cooperation was interrupted by the launch of Elden Ring’s colossal Shadow of the Erdtree DLC on June 21. Now, however, creator LukeYui has updated the mod to be compatible with the expansion.
- The mod has actually undergone a “complete rewrite from the ground up” and now allows players to cooperate through invasions and summons that occur as part of NPC quests.
- Saves from previous versions of Seamless Co-op are compatible with the new version, allowing you and your friends to play Shadow of the Erdtree with the characters used in previous games. Players who do not own the DLC, however, will not be able to join those who own it and are playing in one of its areas.
Just over a week after the launch of the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, the action RPG’s Seamless Co-op mod – a project that revamps the cooperative multiplayer in the PC version by removing the restrictions present in the vanilla game – has been updated and is fully compatible with the expansion.
Its creator, LukeYui, has been working on fixing the mod since the DLC was released after it was broken by the update. Now, after completing a “complete rewrite from scratch”, a new version of it that works with Shadow of the Erdtree is available to install and use right now. Note that while you may encounter some bugs or issues while using the mod, LukeYui claims that it is functional enough for public release.
“While not perfect, it has reached a stage where it can be used to play Elden Ring and DLC cooperatively,” they wrote in a message to users in the mod’s forum posts. “I am aware that some bugs are still present and I will continue to work on them beyond the initial release. The next few days will be crucial for me to work on quickly resolving any problematic issues if they arise. »
Since its initial release in 2022, the Seamless Co-op project has been Elden Ring’s most popular mod, and for good reason: Elden Ring’s traditional co-op is often frustrating because it places barriers between its open-world areas and side dungeons, forcing hosts to dismiss happy co-op players just so they can enter those areas before summoning partners to continue multiplayer. Additionally, there’s no way to summon players to locations where there are no longer any bosses to defeat, which prevents cooperative exploration in many cases. You also can’t use your trusty Torrent steed in co-op, making fighting furnace golems a real chore.
The mod addresses these issues by allowing smooth transitions between areas, open co-op regardless of remaining bosses, and the use of Torrent in multiplayer, while sharing entire game progress and supporting up to six players in a group (you can only summon two cooperators in vanilla). All of this results in a vastly improved cooperative experience, and since it uses its own save files and a peer-to-peer connection system that doesn’t connect to official FromSoftware servers, you don’t even have to worry about to be banned for using it.
As a result, you also can’t be invaded normally, although this new version of Seamless Co-op do support an optional invasion mechanic for those who want to spice up their game with PvP; Personally, I see this as a bonus, as I find the frequency of Elden Ring invasions quite ridiculous, even as someone who enjoys PvP encounters.
One of the major improvements in the new Seamless Co-op is the support for multiplayer in situations where players have the choice to invade or be summoned by NPCs during their story arcs. This allows things like the Volcano Manor invasions and Shadow of the Erdtree NPC quests to be played with friends, and addresses what I considered the mod’s only major flaw.
Installing the mod is straightforward, as it only requires dragging and dropping a few files into Elden Ring’s game folder and editing a configuration file to set a session password. Be sure to read the Seamless Co-op description carefully, though, as it explains how it works and how to use it in detail. By the way, Seamless Co-op is – like all mods on Nexus Mods – completely free, although you can leave a tip for LukeYui on their Ko-fi page if you like.
It is important to know that people who do not own the Elden Ring DLC will not be able to join anyone who owns and plays it. They canhowever, play with someone who has the expansion but is in a base play zone. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, save files from previous versions of Seamless Co-op work perfectly in the latest one, allowing you and your friends to travel to the Land of Shadows with characters used in previous parts (plus the mod page explains how you can convert vanilla saves to Seamless Co-op saves if you want).
As much as I love FromSoftware’s RPGs (at this point, the studio is hands down my favorite developer), I’ve always found their multiplayer systems frustrating and archaic, tedious to use, limiting the potential of what would otherwise be the one of the best cooperative experiences in all of gaming. Elden Ring Seamless Co-op completely breaks those barriers, and now that it’s DLC compatible? A precious item to come, so time for summoning.
The Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is finally here, and it’s one of the best xbox games And best pc games of all time even better. It’s available now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and Windows PC for $39.99.
