Ekta Bhyan wins club throw gold at World Para Athletics Championships – Firstpost

Ekta Bhyan won a gold medal with a season’s best throw of 20.12m in the women’s F51 club throw competition at the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan.

Bhyan’s feat came a day after Deepthi Jeevanji clinched a gold medal in women’s 400m in the T20 category.

The Indian athletes continued their impressive run with Ekta producing the goods to finish first, while Kashish Lakra took home the silver medal with an effort of 14.56m. Algerian Nadjet Boucherf won the bronze medal with a score of 12.70 m.

Ekta, a Haryana Civil Services (HCS) officer, had won a bronze medal at the Asian Paralympics in China.

The 38-year-old, who took up the sport after her selection as an HCS officer, had also won a gold medal in the club throw at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta. She had qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Ekta, who wanted to pursue a medical career, suffered a tragic accident in 2003 that changed her life trajectory. The accident took place near Kundli in Sonepat district when a truck overturned on its cabin on the Delhi-Haryana border.

While she suffered a quadriplegic spinal cord injury and has been wheelchair-bound ever since, six other people were killed in the accident.

On Monday, Asian Para Games gold medalist Deepthi had broken a world record of 55.07 seconds in the women’s 400m T20 race en route to her gold medal. Yogesh Kathuniya and Bhagyashri Mahavrao Jadhav won silver medals in the men’s discus throw F56 and women’s shot put F34 respectively.

On Sunday, Nishad Kumar (T47 high jump) and 200m runner Preethi Pal (T35 200m race) won silver and bronze, respectively.

India’s tally now stands at seven medals in the competition – 2 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze. The championships will continue until May 25.
