Eight models gang-raped at gunpoint while filming music video at South African mine

Eight models were gang-raped at gunpoint by an armed gang while filming a gospel music video near an illegal gold mine in South Africa.

The shocking crime took place while a production crew was filming in the wild near West Village, Krugersdorp, near Johannesburg on July 28.

The models and crew were raped up to ten times each, the youngest victim, aged 19, was raped ten times and the oldest was 35.

The gang also systematically robbed the crew and the girls of their cell phones, rings, jewelry, purses, cash, and cameras.

The incident shocked South Africa, with some of the highest crime rates and the third highest rape rate in the world, and renewed calls for the chemical castration of convicted rapists.

Police have made mass arrests of illegal miners in the area after a shooting that left two people dead.

Eighty-two illegal miners are due to appear in court today on suspicion of illegal mining, attempted murder, possession of explosives and breaching immigration laws.

Some of them are believed to be responsible for the gang rape that took place at the illegal mine on Thursday.

There are many other illegal mines at the location where the crime took place and the sound of the music is believed to have caught the attention of illegal miners.

There were 12 women and 10 men involved in the filming of the film and it is believed that all the models came from nearby Johannesburg and were hired for the day.

The girls tried to run when assailants emerged from the bush wearing Basotho balaclavas and blankets, but the gang fired a volley of shots at them.

The models and production crew were ordered to lie down and the gang whistled and ten other men in balaclavas also appeared from the maquis.

The gang took the models one by one into the bush as the robberies continued and raped them up to ten times each before returning for another victim.

When South African police services arrived on the scene, a shootout broke out and two illegal miners were shot dead and another injured, but 17 escaped.

Police also arrested 65 other illegal minors in the area for alleged immigration offenses while launching a massive manhunt for the gang of rape in the wild.

A 19-year-old victim has told how she lied to her attacker saying she had a miscarriage to avoid further rape, reports The Sunday Times South Africa.

“I had no way out but to lie, because they were picking us up one by one. There are others who were raped by six to ten men,” she said.

Her 21-year-old sister, who was raped in a ditch, said the girls’ ordeal lasted four hours.

Gold mining dates back to 1887 when a rich deposit was discovered at Witwatersrand and the town of Krugersdorp, where West Village grew into a boom town.

Police spokesman Brigadier Brenda Muridil confirmed that 65 potential suspects were arrested on Friday night for immigration violations.

The incident shocked South Africa, with some of the highest crime rates and the third highest rape rate in the world, and renewed calls for the chemical castration of convicted rapists.

She said police had recovered unlicensed firearms, explosives and items belonging to the victims during the operation, but had yet to identify the other 17 men.

Police Minister Bheki Cele earlier announced that three men had been arrested, while police searched the area for the other suspects.

He confirmed police were investigating 32 counts of rape and one case of armed robbery and said the women had been taken to hospitals or safe places.

Their distraught parents were contacted to hunt down and retrieve the girls.

He said: “The operation is continuing until all suspects are found and the response will be serious to show the state that our protection of young women is clear,” Cele said.

“Even the men were stripped and many were left naked or just in their underwear.”

The minister said that the police had carried out many successful operations in which they shut down operations in illegal mines where mainly illegal immigrants dig for gold.

They are known as Zama Zama and are very dangerous, terrorizing, raping and robbing locals. They are often involved in sprawling shootouts with the police.

They illegally venture into old closed mines and burrow into rock to try and find the gold that has been missed in what can be a lucrative operation.

But many die in collapsed tunnels or in in-fighting if a miner gets rich.

A West Village resident in Krugersdorp speaking to News24 on condition of anonymity to avoid reprisals said the attack was not a surprise.

She said: ‘They have been terrorizing the locals for a long time and we hear gunshots at night. It’s not something new. It’s an old and persistent problem that petrifies us all.

“Women have already been raped and dragged into the bush. Zama Zama is an old problem, but now we’re at a place where it’s destructive and dangerous.

The villager said the illegal miners fought among themselves over the illegal ownership of the old mine and the residents who used it for recreational and other purposes.

She added: “There is a lot of killing and fighting between them and they are fighting and killing each other. Every morning you see their bodies by the side of the road. It will never stop.

South Africa has the third highest crime rate in the world, according to World Population Review, with “particularly high rates of assault, rape, homicide and other violent crime”.
