Ehpad: a book denounces “rationing” at Orpea – Vannes
| Latest News Headlines | Today Headlines

It produced an explosion even before its publication, plunging by 16%, on Monday, the stock market listing of the French group Orpea, the world number one in the nursing home and clinic sector.

. “The gravediggers”, the investigative book by independent journalist Victor Castanet, is published this Wednesday. It demonstrates the “exclusively accounting management of the care of vulnerable human beings” – mainly, but not only, in Orpea establishments.

“We were rationed: it was three diapers a day”

The daily Le Monde has obtained preview extracts. Victor Castanet produces the testimony of a former life assistant from Orpea, Saïda Boulahyane, who describes “this terrible smell of piss, as soon as you enter. (…) We were rationed: it was three diapers a day maximum”. Victor Castanet continues: “The lawyer for a resident on the fifth floor mentions the use of many temporary workers, denounces rationed meals and speaks of stressed staff. (…) Another (family) regrets that there is no night nurse”. In addition to abuse, the “Gravediggers” also deciphers the express rise of Orpea, supported by Xavier Bertrand when he was Minister of Health, according to the testimony of Patrick Métais, former medical director of Clinéa, the “clinical” branch of the group.

“Orpea has gone very far” according to the CGT
“Clearly, Orpea has really gone very, very far,” says Dominique Chave, of the Federal Union of Private Health (UFSP) of the CGT. Orpea vigorously denies the book’s claims. “We do not ration, it does not correspond to our directives, it does not correspond to our values”, declared, Tuesday evening, on BFMTV, Jean-Christophe Romersi, director general of Orpea.
But the CGT, which contributed to the investigation for three years, denounces “insufficient salaries and authoritarian or even violent management”: “In this book, testimonies provide elements on fraud in professional elections, union discrimination against CGT”.

The UFSP CGT wishes “that we prevent the generation of dividends on this activity, to the detriment of patients and caregivers. Public money is given to pension funds with no return. We must renationalise the structures for the elderly”. The Minister of Health instructed the Minister Delegate for Autonomy, Brigitte Bourguignon, “to immediately seize the group (Orpea), so that answers can be provided”. “The State has a strong responsibility, believes Dominique Chave. The supervisory authorities and regional health agencies keep their eyes closed to these structures. »

* Orpea has only one Ehpad in Brittany, in Vannes.
