  • Egg prices have dropped over the month in April by approximately 13%, the largest decrease since 1984.
  • Analysts have warned that this might not yet bring too much relief to buyers.
  • The prices were raised in part due to the shortage of supply of the bird flu.

It’s time to prepare breakfast.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Egg price index fell by around 13% during the month in April, the largest decrease since March 1984. Consumers have faced high prices of eggs and shortages in recent years, partly due to bird flu epidemics that have reduced the offer.

The drop in April in the month is the fifth largest recorded Since the start of the BLS, the modern egg monitoring index in 1947.

Analysts warned too much to read in the monthly dive.

“The drop in prices is a welcome relief for consumers, but this month, brilliants change the brilliants about how prices have become due to the bird flu epidemic,” Stephen Kates, Bankrate financial analyst told Business Insider.

Kates said that the average price of high -year eggs in dozen in April was 79% higher than a year at $ 5.12. This increase from one year to another is even cooler than the increase of more than 100% in March.

The egg index increased by 49% compared to the year in April, cooler than other increases from one year to the next so far in 2025, but still the largest increase in prices among the items followed by BLS. Overall inflation increased to 2.3%, the smallest increase since February 2021.

“The little relief offered in April is really a drop in the bucket given the way egg prices have climbed,” said Elizabeth Renter, economist from Nerdwallet. “That said, nobody will discuss with the money economy on grocery store, and the prices of the grocery store fell on the whole last month.”

The tenant added that food prices are volatile, so the drop may not last. The global food index also dropped in April from March, the first drop since 2020.

“When you talk about food inflation, it is best to step back and get a complete image of the price trajectory,” said the tenant.
