Ed Sheeran meets Ipswich squad to plan Premier League promotion night

Ed Sheeran wasted no time in throwing a celebration with the Ipswich Town team following their promotion to the Premier League.

Tractor Boys beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 on the final day of the Championship season to send them back to the top flight.

Ipswich last played in the Premier League in 2002 and therefore ended a 22-year wait to return to the bigs.

Musical superstar Sheeran, who has sponsored the club’s shirts since 2021, is a big fan and was spotted at the East Anglian derby against Norwich.

And although he was in the United States to compete in the Miami Grand Prix this weekend, he still took the opportunity to congratulate the team on their promotion.

In an Instagram video, he explained how jet lag meant he couldn’t get up at 7 a.m. in Florida to watch his club on TV.

Sheeran watched the match in what was apparently his hotel lobby with three other Ipswich fans he met on Friday.

“I wish I was there,” he could be seen saying before they all celebrated at the full-time whistle.

Even though the jubilant scenes at Portman Road had only just begun, Sheeran was able to FaceTime the team while they were in the dressing room chanting: “We’re going up, let’s say we’re going up!”

He was then asked where he was, but said he was back on Wednesday before asking: “Do you want to go out?”

This was met with a “Yeah!” » confident, with Sheeran then saying he would be in touch to help them plan their celebrations.

The director also gave a cheeky explanation as to why he wasn’t there to enjoy the scenes in person, saying: “I have to pay for the sponsorship somehow!”

Wes Burns and Omari Hutchinson both scored for Ipswich to seal their victory over Huddersfield and confirm their return to the Premier League.

Kieran McKenna’s side have now made back-to-back promotions after finishing second in League One last season.

They will join Championship winners Leicester City in the top flight along with the winner of the Leeds United, Southampton, West Brom and Norwich City play-offs.
