Eclipse viewers, pay attention: The Illinois Department of Public Health issued a recall Monday for a pair of eclipse glasses sold on Amazon and at several retailers in southern Illinois.
On Amazon, the glasses are listed as “Biniki Solar Eclipse Glasses AAS 2024 Approved – CE and ISO Certified Safety Glasses for Direct Sun Viewing (6-Pack),” according to the opinion of the ministry.
They’re also listed as a #1 bestseller on Amazon and were still available Monday afternoon as the eclipse began.
But the glasses potentially don’t meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard — a designation by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for glasses that make it safe to look directly at the sun, according to CBS News.
In addition to Amazon, the glasses were sold at a handful of local retailers, several of which posted reviews on social media, according to CBS.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
Customers are notified by Amazon if a product they purchased has been recalled.
“When we become aware of a recall, we discontinue all affected product offerings and retain any associated inventory in our distribution centers,” the company says on its site. “We are also contacting customers who have purchased such products, and sellers who may have offered such products, to inform them of the recall.”
