The earthquakes were late on Saturday evening by three goals in the first half in eight minutes and could not recover despite three strikes from their star tandem, losing against Kansas City 5-3 in Kansas City in Paypal Park.
The Quakes (3-1-5, 10 points) checked the possession, took more shots and created more likely than Kansas City (2-1-6, 7 points), but their defense broke in key moments to send them to a fifth defeat in seven games.
“You concede three goals in the first 30 minutes, you do not deserve to win. I give a lot of credit to our team. We obtained it at 3-2 at halftime,” said San Jose coach Bruce Arena, to journalists after the defeat. “I felt that we were able to win the match, but we continued to make mistakes that were expensive in the second half.”
Goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr., starting his first match for the Quakes in place of the injured Daniel, deflected a bottom, led near the left corner of the 6 yards by Logan Ndenbe in the 18th minute, but he found himself in the back of the net.
Three minutes later, Daniel Salloi caught the earthquakes on the wrong foot and beat the defender Rodrigues on a frankly frank ball by goalkeeper Kc John Pulskamp to the 18 yards of San Jose. Salloi beaten Edwards with a left foot shooting after checked the long pass with a quick touch.
In the 24th minute, Manu García scored on a blow on a sliding Edwards in the center of the box on a pass from Shapi Suleymanov to make 3-0 in the blink of an eye.
Josef Martinez obtained the earthquakes on the board in the 30th minute with a right finish on a decisive pass from Rodrigues after Pulskamp, deviating a defender of Kansas City.
Three minutes before half-time, Chicho Arango marked on a head after a free kick near the right corner was lit in a crowded penalty area. The sixth goal of the Arango season, which arrived in a trade in Salt Lake during the offseason, brought it equally for second place in MLS.
“It was just a classic and too short situation in the place where the game takes place and the players are starting to reproduce, but it is already too late,” midfielder Ian Harkes told post-match journalists. “We should not wait until 3-0 to have a kick in the ass, in terms of good mentality.”
Salloi again took advantage of a defensive ventilation of San Jose in the 73rd, beating Rodrigues and a disorganized rise line for a square ball of the replacement Erik Thommy and exceeded Edwards. Thommy delivered a dagger in the 85th minute of a Salloi assist.
“Some players played badly tonight and made big mistakes. I take responsibility for it,” said Arena. “These private players will not become again on the field unless they can do things well and be more consistent in their game. We have made mistakes which, I think, have cost us for sure.”
Martinez added a penalty kick goal after being killed by pulskamp in time of time.
San Jose had 63% possession and exceeded 22-8 after having beat the first match of season 2-1 on the road on March 1.
