I’m not the biggest fan of Eagles game previews, mainly because I don’t have time to watch even more film during the season. But these are the playoffs! Let’s move on to the Rams.
Full disclosure: I struggle with previews because there is too much to say. I could go on forever. So I’m not going to break this down into strengths and weaknesses. I’m just going to give some thoughts on the Rams after watching as much film as I can and looking at the stats. I use a bunch of stats in this one, and credit goes to Team rankings, PFFAnd Sports Information Solutions. Finally, my podcast co-host @ShaneHaffNFL is responsible for putting together some graphics in this one. I will also use film from the Eagles’ Week 12 game. Let’s go!
8) Nakobe Dean again on Whip! The sweat does enough to cover and Dean completely blows his back. Fangio’s defense is perfect for Dean because it allows him to blitz multiple times per game and Dean takes full advantage of this freedom. Also look at the cover! pic.twitter.com/eU0ydVMID6

2) This is the perfect call by the Rams against this coverage. Puka Nacua has great weight against Quinyon Mitchell and he still narrowly beats him. That’s the sign of an exceptional cornerback. Quinyon couldn’t cover this topic better. Also, I wish Jordan Davis could… pic.twitter.com/YscRr89uus

However, the Eagles immediately made a schematic change. They went to a 5-man front on the first drive, which nullified the Rams’ running game. The problem is the Eagles kicked Brandon Graham inside and moved Zack Baun to EDGE. Unfortunately, the Eagles won’t be able to do that this week. I expect to see a little more of Jordan Davis this week.
Eagles Defense All22 vs. Rams. 1) What I appreciated most was how quickly Fangio adapted. The Rams had a few good runs on the first drive and the Eagles immediately went to their 5-man front with Baun falling to EDGE and BG kicking inside. This is a fantastic piece of… pic.twitter.com/pCAKdfBdQg

I’m still sad for Brandon Graham.
9) Ah man, the Eagles are really going to miss BG’s ability to kick inside. It was so effective this year. He blows up this race.
I hope he returns next year, but if this is the last piece I post on BG, it’s been a pleasure watching him. An Eagles legend. This team… pic.twitter.com/zLkKac6bp2

4) Give me your best Jurgens/Becton nicknames. They deserve a name. Some of the combo blocks in this game were out of this world. Each lineman dominated the running game. It was as good as it gets.
Look at Becton’s strength! pic.twitter.com/xx2YvKL4ZK

13) Let’s finish with the league MVP: Saquon Barkley. The Eagles ran a ton of counters in this one and it worked again here. The problem with stacking the box is a missed tackle and Barkley is out. No one can catch him. The Eagles OL do a fantastic job “pinning” the Rams DL… pic.twitter.com/CUWELk7voU

12) Once again, good luck blitzing Jalen Hurts. The offense has been so good against the blitz this year. Hurts hits his back foot, throws a beauty in time for his best WR. Easy money. Hurts was very accurate in the middle of the field in this one. He clearly worked hard on this… pic.twitter.com/g0omns1gZI

Wire Eagles Offense All22 vs. Rams. 1) I don’t know if this is a designed rollout or if Hurts just takes off because of space, but it’s a nice throw en route to AJ Brown. The Eagles did not attack vertically in this match but were outstanding in the intermediate area of the field. pic.twitter.com/76sDyKnnXe

I will never feel confident against a Sean McVay team because I think he is a fantastic coach. You just can’t count on Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua and Kyren Williams. The Rams offense is capable of putting up points against any defense. However, I’ll feel pretty bad if the Eagles don’t get this win. The Eagles are the better team in almost every way and they play at home. I feel pretty good about this one. But it’s the playoffs… you can never feel too confident. I expect the Eagles to play with another conservative game plan that relies heavily on running the football. Hopefully this will be enough, as it was last week.
If you want more, I’ll be posting my thoughts daily on Discord, which are attached to my Patreon. I recorded a Rams preview that is only available on Patreon.
