Newark, New Jersey (WABC) – An equipment problem led to major disruptions in and outside Newark airport on Monday, officials.
The FAA says it started slowing arrivals and departures at Newark Liberty International Airport after telecommunications and equipment problems at Philadelphia Tracon, which guides planes inside and outside Newark.
Early on Monday evening, officials said that the breakdown had been fixed, but they also revealed that they had very few air traffic controllers to manage air space around and outside Newark.
The perplexed controllers tried to explain the situation to the pilots stationed on the ground while dozens of planes turned to alternative airports from top to bottom on the east coast.
United said that he diverted more than 35 flights to alternative airports and delayed flights to their departure airports, creating a backlog.
The airline expected cancellations and delays for the rest of the day due to FAA endowment problems.
Sue Han’s five -hour flight from Los Angeles has turned into a nine odyssey.
“It was long … a little longer than expected,” said Han.
The delayed passenger David Bibeau was able to spend quality time in Alentown, Pennsylvania, on his way to Memphis on Monday afternoon. His wrapped plane was low in fuel.
“Hours and hours of bypass Alntown, the bank and then sit on the tarmac,” said Bibeau.
But in the end, things, slowly, came back to normal. Tired travelers tried to look at the right side.
“I have never been so happy to be in Newark in my life,” said Bibeau.
United has given a renunciation of travel to offer customers flexibility to manage their travel plans.
