Dutch police arrest activist Greta Thunberg during climate protest in The Hague

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Climate activist Greta Thunberg was among dozens of people arrested Saturday by police in The Hague as they removed protesters who were partially blocking a road in the Dutch city.

Thunberg was seen holding up a victory sign as she sat on a bus used by police to take detained protesters to the scene of a demonstration against Dutch subsidies and tax breaks for companies linked to fuel industries fossils.

Campaign group Extinction Rebellion said ahead of the protest that activists would block the main highway to The Hague, but a heavy police presence, including mounted officers, initially blocked activists from accessing the road.

A small group of people managed to sit down on another road and were arrested after ignoring police orders to leave.

Extinction Rebellion activists have blocked the highway past the temporary headquarters of the Dutch Parliament more than 30 times to protest against the subsidies.

Her activism has inspired a global youth movement demanding greater efforts to combat climate change since she began organizing weekly protests outside the Swedish parliament starting in 2018.

She has been fined several times in Sweden and the United Kingdom for civil disobedience in connection with protests.
